Riga has been a center of the region since its foundation. It has attracted folk of different intents, business and conquerors alike and each of them left a lasting mark in its history. You can’t explore whole Riga in a day, but we’ll make the most of the time we have and will look deep into the heart of Riga. Still central part of it, but not so polished and touristy.
Central market and the Academy of science
Our route through Riga begins in the Central market, which is located in an old Zeppelin hangars and once was the biggest closed space marketplace in Europe. We’ll go to the top of the first highrise building in Latvia and a very visible legacy of the Soviet architecture to see the Riga and it’s surrounding area from another point of view.
Sanctuaries, Jewish ghetto and the ‘Moscow’ suburbs.
We’ll continue by entering one of the most diverse and historically complex suburb of Riga, named after Russian capital Moscow. Once there, we’ll see Jewish ghetto, Soviet history monuments and the biggest wooden church in the Baltics. This district is the only place where you can find churches from 5 different confessions and lots of other historical evidence.
The Other Riga
Moving forward, we’ll cross greeneries and parks of the city to the close center to listen to the real heartbeat of Riga. Eat ice cream, check out some junk stores and watch residents go by. We’ll dive a bit into the everyday Riga, leaving the usual tourist routes and looking behind the curtains.
Beer of Natural scent
We’ll finish our tour by visiting a local brewery, that uses local herbs and plants to make a beer that tastes like forests, meadows and gives you a taste of Latvia.
